By an uncanny synchronicity  Michael Garrick passed away from us on Remembrance Day, arguably around 11am. At this same time being pressed in Wales was the CD release of one of his unique choral works. A jazz cantata entitled "Bovingdon Poppies".
This is a singularly fascinating and timely work involving string orchestra, full chorus, solo voices and a jazz quintet.
Below is the information Michael had written about the work but sadly passed away before taking delivery of the finished item.

New for REMEMBRANCE DAY

BOVINGDON POPPIES is a story which haunted me for 20 years. The full history of astonishing coincidences leading to its performance in 1993 is given in the book below.

GARRICK ARCHIVE is a new label to document less conventional material not found elsewhere.

Contact Gabriel Garrick direct if you are interested. The piece concludes with a jazz setting of the words "They shall not grow old as we that are left grow old...."

It is, I think, the only jazz music for Remembrance Day I am so far aware of.

(..."isn't it time for a World Remembrance Day?"..)

"Bill Evans' playful Peri's Scope was followed by Garrick's Old Man's Blues and then a storming version of his Dusk Fire. Jazz musicians can be guilty of not engaging with the audience other than musically, but not Garrick. He was both interesting and laugh-out-loud funny, with fascinating stories of his work with poets, and a couple of fine impersonations, too. Limehouse Blues was a romp, Garrick's Prayer simply trancendent. Ashworth's composition Cuban Cafe brought out Garrick's most adventurous side....it was jazz at its humane best."
